More than 23,000 Americans die each year from drug-resistant bacteria. CBS Information medical contributor Dr. Holly Phillips informed the CBS TODAY co-hosts that the findings show there are two things going incorrect in hospitals: Antibiotics are being overprescribed and, based on the report, they are largely unregulated. About half of individuals before they leave a healthcare facility are given an antibiotic, and in many of those cases they didn’t require it, she said. Phillips said that, when antibiotics are needed actually, doctors and hospitals aren’t always making the best choices. We’re reaching for the big guns, the strongest antibiotics, when something more narrow spectrum or essentially weaker could have the same effect, she said.Thompson said he previously shared his issues with Dr. Hooker for many months to going general public with his info prior. But he said he was not conscious that Hooker was recording the conversations, ‘nor was I provided any choice relating to whether my name would be made open public or my voice would be put on the Internet.’ ‘I am providing information to Congressman William Posey, not to mention shall continue to cooperate with Congress,’ Dr. Thompson further stated. ‘I have also offered to help with reanalysis of the analysis data or development of further studies.
